Our students in Mrs. Gevedon’s sixth grade Social Studies classes have been learning about topographic maps and their real world applications. Students experienced an augmented reality sandbox, which allowed students to create different geographic formations while computer software and sensor identified elevation changes in the sand. Contour lines projected by the program allowed students to identify rapid and gentle elevation changes. Students also built Play-Doh mountains which they cross-sectioned into layers. These layers were then traced to create a topographic map of their landform. Students used the contour lines they created to identify steep and gradual elevation changes of their mountains. Finally, one activity allowed students explore part of our school grounds. Using topographic maps of the school property, students were able to connect the elevation changes on their maps with what they were seeing in the real world. A special thanks to Coyle SWPPP Professionals for the use of the AR Sandbox and for providing topographic maps of the school grounds.

French Class: Student learning can occur in many different ways, and it is important for educators to recognize the various approaches that can be taken to foster a positive learning environment. Whether it is teacher-led instruction, student-led discussions, student choice assignments, or project-based learning, each method has its own unique benefits and advantages. I would like to share with you some pictures that highlights the power of student-led learning. Mrs. Fallang, a dedicated teacher, walked into her classroom one day and was pleasantly surprised by what she encountered. Her students had taken the initiative to engage in a learning experience that was not part of the planned curriculum. As Mrs. Fallang entered the classroom, she noticed two students huddled around a map, pointing out various locations. The students were actively involved in discussing and learning about different geographical regions. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear that they were genuinely interested in expanding their knowledge. #PrebleShawneePride
