Water Pipe Break Repaired, Water Cleaned Up, Building Ready for Students and Staff at Jr/Sr HS

Sometime last evening to early this morning, a water pipe burst at the Jr/Sr High School. The mess left behind has been cleaned and the building is ready for students and staff. Below is a letter I sent to staff this evening. The information is appropriate for all to see...so, I am providing it for all to see.

Staff,

I wanted to make you aware of a maintenance issue we had at the building today.

Sometime late yesterday afternoon to overnight, a flex pipe under a sink in the third floor men's restroom failed. This caused a lot of water to flow out of the restroom, into the hallway, and ending in about three classrooms across the hallway. Of course, water behaving the way it tends to behave, it proceeded to flow through cracks, crevices, and holes and made its way to the second and first floors. Needless to say, it was a mess. A lot of ceiling tiles were turned to mush and unfortunately, we lost some materials/textbooks in some classrooms. Dianna/Roger will be contacting those impacted. At any rate, please take a close look at your area tomorrow and please note anything that is lost or damaged. Also, do not throw anything away before getting the OK. We need to have a detailed accounting for insurance purposes.

If Brad Wright hadn't stopped in the building this morning, we would've had twice the cleanup. So, thank you Brad! Luke and Jeremy quickly stopped the leak and began coordinating the cleanup. Mollie was onsite to coordinate with our insurance company. Sue Woodard, Peanut and Con Cress, Kim Gregory, Tui Cimprich, Brad Wright, Dianna Whitis and her husband Brooks, and Roger Ellis were there this morning as well. The custodial crew did an amazing job. The company that arrived was amazed at how much they completed in such a short period of time.

The company began the process of drying the facility and removing tiles. There were many drywall areas impacted. They will take core samples and may (probably will) need to completely replace some walls.

As part of the cleanup, we will monitor the moisture levels in the walls and areas of the building in general. We will leave the ceiling tiles out of the trays for a few days to make sure everything is completely dry. We have the tiles on site and will get that completed as soon as we are able.

I believe that is everything I can think of at this time. We will be in session tomorrow and will work to quickly get the facility back to looking normal very soon.

In a successful school operation, people make the difference. We are blessed at Preble Shawnee to have people in every facet of our operation dedicated in making our schools a place to be proud of. I'm not trying to be sappy when I say I'm a profoundly honored to have the fortune to be this districts' superintendent.

See you tomorrow.

Matt
